Der Beitrag untersucht die Genese des Bildungromans am Besipiel der Geschichte des Agathon (1766-67) von Ch. M. Wiekand, Genre par exellence der bürgerlichen Schichten des 18. Jh.s., die versuchen, sich zu emanzipieren. Dabei wurde am aufklärerischen Ideal der Perfektibilität des Einzelnen und der Gruppe festgehalten. Mit der Zeit schwindet der Glauben an die potentielle Perfektibilität. In manchen von der Forschung immerhin weiter so bezeichneten 'Bildungsromanen' dient die Ichwerdung weniger der Verbesserung des Einzelnen und der Gesellschaft, als vielmehr dem zutage Treten der Merkmale des 'Andersartigen'.
